GDev Academy

A YouTube channel about game development. 12,000+ subscribers.

I started GDev Academy as a distribution channel for my indie game development projects. The idea was that educational content had a much longer discovery lifetime than direct product promotion, while a game-development audience provided a natural place to introduce the games we were building.

The channel grew organically to more than 12,000 subscribers. I was responsible for the overall concept and direction of the project, while a content producer handled most of the day-to-day video production.

I made only one video for the channel entirely by myself, from concept and script to recording and editing. It reached more than 200,000 views and was the clearest expression of the original idea behind the channel: educational content built around a product I wanted to promote. The video coincided with the release of Lock the Fox and featured the game throughout, which is why I chose to make this particular video myself rather than delegate it.

Despite the audience growth, the channel generated less commercial value for the games than I had expected. I eventually stopped developing it as a business project and handed the channel over to the content producer, who continues to use it.
